Your pH meter is lying to you. Not maliciously. It does not know it is lying. It is a probe full of gel and a tiny voltage and a number on a screen that you, a person with other things to do, have decided to trust completely. That is the whole problem. The number is not the truth. It is the meter’s opinion about the truth, and the meter has not been honest with anyone since the last time you calibrated it.
ONE READING IS A GUESS.
A single number off a single meter is not a measurement. It is a vote. To get a measurement you need the meter to agree with a known reference — that is what calibration is — and you need it to agree at two points, not one, because the slope between them is where the lie lives. Single-point calibration tells you the meter is right at exactly one value and says nothing about anything else. Your reservoir is not sitting at exactly that one value. It never is.
Calibrate with fresh reference solution, at the temperature your feed actually is, not the temperature the bottle was in the truck. Temperature moves the reading. Cold solution reads differently than the same solution warm. The meter may compensate. The meter may also be wrong about its compensation. See the pattern.

STORAGE IS THE WHOLE GAME.
Most dead meters were not used to death. They were stored to death. The glass bulb and the junction need to stay wet — wet with storage solution, which is potassium chloride, not tap water and absolutely not the distilled or RO water people reach for because it feels clean. Pure water pulls ions out of the probe to feel less pure. It will flatten your slope in a weekend. A probe stored dry is not resting. It is leaving.
THE THREE-METER RULE.
We keep three. One calibrated this morning, used for decisions. One sealed as a backup, calibrated and left alone, so when the first one drifts we have a sober witness. And one old meter we do not trust at all, which we read on purpose. The one you do not trust is the most useful of the three, because the day it suddenly agrees with the good one, something has changed — usually the good one. Disagreement is information. A shop full of meters that all say the same number has not achieved accuracy. It has achieved consensus, which is a different and more dangerous thing.
Replace the probe, not your faith, when the slope falls off and a fresh two-point calibration will not bring it back. Probes are consumable. Roughly a year of real use, less in hard water, less again if it spent a summer dry on a shelf because someone was too stubborn to call it a sign.
Calibrate before you panic. Usually it was the meter.
